KRISTAN ARONSON, PHD

Kristan Aronson is a Professor in the Department of Community Health and
Epidemiology, the School of Environmental Studies, and the Division of
Cancer Care and Epidemiology at the Queen's Cancer Research Institute,
all at Queen's University in beautiful Kingston, Ontario. She is also
founding Director of the Institute of Population and Public Health at
Queen's.

Kristan completed her undergraduate and Master's degrees at McGill
University. After additional training in Heidelberg and at the
University of Edinburgh, she obtained a PhD in epidemiology and
biostatistics at the University of Toronto, followed by a post-doctoral
award at the International Agency for Research in Cancer in Lyon,
France. In 1991, Dr. Aronson became a professor at the University of
Toronto and began conducting research on the determinants of breast
cancer. At Queen's University since 1995, Kristan's research program
examines the relative contribution of environmental and genetic factors
in the etiology of cancer through multi-disciplinary studies.
Environmental factors currently being investigated are pesticides and
PCBs, PAHs, light at night, phthalates etc. Advances in understanding of
basic mechanisms of cancer causation, biomarkers of exposure and
disease, and understanding of the human genome are incorporated into
these studies, funded by CIHR and CBCRA. Kristan is the recipient of
many awards including a Research Scholar Award (NHRDP), an Investigator
Award (CIHR), the Premier's Research Excellence Award (Ontario), a
Career Scientist Award (Ontario), and the Golden Jubilee Medallion of
Queen Elizabeth II.
